Sandvik in Zhenjiang is seeking for a

130212 Senior Technical Engineer, technical market support welding products

Sandvik Materials Technology, a world-leading manufacturer of high value-added products in advanced materials, special alloys, metallic and ceramic resistance materials. The position would directly report to SMT China R&D Manager, below please refer to the job description:

Key performance areas:

· Responsible for planning own work within given area of responsibility and within outlined goals and priorities for technical market support for weld products in China.

· Responsible for a welding application laboratory (WAC)

· Analyze the need for added or improved test methods within this area and for weld products at the R&D center, China, if identified, to present this with a plan, including costs, technical specifications and time plan.

· Plan and give training on basic level about welding and filler metals, their testing, properties, applications and material selection

· Plan and give training to designated people in the sales organization within specific areas, such as specialized within weld methods, weld properties, standards and specifications, welds in selected application areas.

· Plan and give training and seminars for customers with a content that is requested by national sales managers or GPMs

· Assist the sales people within the WHT and Tube organizations in China with technical customer questions, e.g. including standards, specifications, welding procedures, materials selection or questions for required changes of, or upset, process conditions

· Participate in customer meetings, seminars or conferences to present and discuss technical issues and customer questions

· Participate in conferences with own papers and presentations

· Plan, perform, evaluate and report materials analysis within failure analysis, competitor material analysis and, on the behalf of other Sandvik BAs, also for non-weld materials

· Evaluate the need of tests for weld material and welds at other SMT R&D facilities, or selected universities or institutes with whom we are cooperating, specify and order such tests with the required information for cost allocation and required time of response and required type of response

· To duly report hourly cost on the correct cost center or internal order

Your profile:

1. Filler metals:

Very good knowledge and experience of filler metals offered by SMT: MIG Welding Wire, Flux Cored Electrodes, TIG rods, Stick Electrodes, Submerged Arc Wire Electrodes and Flux, Submerged Arc and Electro-slag Strip Electrodes and Flux, and the microstructure, corrosion properties and mechanical properties of welds, including typical specifications, test methods and standards.

2. Welding technique and methods:

Very good knowledge about MIG, manual TIG, automatic TIG, orbital TIG, SAW, ESW and manual metal arc welding processes including suitable choice of welding process, joint preparation, selection of protective gas mixture, welding parameters, post weld heat treatments etc. Able to give instructions and training on this subject. Able to prepare preliminary weld procedures (pWPS), if necessary.

3. Welding metallurgy:

· Very god knowledge of solidification of welds in stainless steels and nickel-base alloys. Very good knowledge of phase equilibrium and phase transformations in stainless steels and nickel-base alloys. Very good knowledge of the influence of microstructure on materials properties.

· Very good knowledge of materials properties in stainless steels and in particular stainless welds.

· Knowledge of slag systems for SAW, ESW and stick electrodes. Knowledge of shielding gases for MIG and TIG welding.

4. Welding standards:

Good knowledge of welding standards within GB (Chinese National Standard), ISO, AWS, ASME and EN (European Standard).

5. Microstructure analysis:

Experienced in etching methods for welds. Very good understanding of metallography of metallic materials, alloys and welds and the use of stereo- and light optical microscopy and image analysis – also of SEM images - to identify and quantify microstructure features, such as phase composition, precipitates, grain sizes, chemical and mechanical defects, also including point counting.

6. Scanning Electron Microscopy:

Good understanding in how this technique can be used to analyze microstructure, chemical composition (BSE and EDS), typical corrosion or mechanical defects. Able to instruct the SEM operator to perform the correct tests and to summarize, make conclusions and report the results. Able to perform own SEM-analyses.

7. Weld analysis:

· Very good understanding of how welds are analyzed with respect to hardness, mechanical properties, local chemical composition, surface defects, weld joint penetration, inclusions, corrosion resistance etc.

· Able to independently perform the majority of these tests for newly made welds and welds that have been used in applications to determine weld properties and failure modes.

· Experienced in measuring ferrite levels in welds with ferrite-scope or using ASTM E 562.

8. Weld applications:

· Very good understanding of the use of SMT’s welding consumables for applications, oil refinery equipment and fertilizer production equipment.

· Very good understanding of typical welding applications, e.g. pressure vessels, heat exchangers, piping systems and their typical requirements and pitfalls.

· Very good understanding in how to select filler metals and weld overlay consumables, weld methods and weld parameters for these applications, based on material to be welded (or overlay welded).

· Can understand, discuss and handle materials selection, process descriptions, specifications and customer requirements.

9. Wire and strip production:

Good understanding of welding wire and welding strip production.

10. English:

Able to communicate in English without problems, orally and in writing. Able to write technical reports in English.

11. Experience:

5 years of working experience at SMT R&D or within similar business within welding of steels, stainless steels and nickel-base materials.

12. Education:

MSc Materials Engineer or similar.
