Position Summary

NYU Shanghai Library seeks a dynamic, customer-oriented, flexible individual to coordinate services as Academic Commons Manager. Reporting to the Library Director, the incumbent is responsible for the management of the NYU Shanghai Library Academic Commons facility and for providing a variety of reference and research services to library patrons in person and remotely. The Academic Commons Manager will coordinate activities related to the Library Academic Commons; supervise one or more student assistants; conduct library tours, basic information literacy classes, and term paper clinics for students; assist library patrons with complex research, reference, and collections inquiries and research strategies; and participate in various special projects and initiatives. Evening and weekend work may be required.
Responsibilities

? Primarily responsible for day-to-day operations of the NYU Shanghai Library Information desk and Academic Commons, including:
? scheduling staff for the Information Desk, serving at the Information Desk, explaining library policies and procedures, responding to library alias emails as appropriate, adhering to appropriate standards for processing items and records in library systems, maintaining circulating equipment and the circulation manual.
? Hire, train, and oversee the supervision of student assistants working in the Academic Commons.
? Interpret and communicate departmental policies to patrons, faculty and staff. Respond to and resolve complex/non routine policy queries and delivery services requests.
? Establish work schedules to ensure adequate staffing coverage for completion of deadline dependent work.
? Assist library patrons with their research, reference, and collections inquiries in person, by telephone and electronically. Drawing on expert knowledge of the NYU Division of Libraries databases and web resources, advise patrons regarding research strategies; refer to appropriate subject specialist or other libraries. Assist patrons with finding materials in the catalog and using a variety of computerized/electronic resources. Alert patrons to and assist them with other library services.
? Participate in instructional services programs for patrons; conduct bibliographic instruction, library tours, term paper clinics and other instructional forums. Offer tutorials and research instruction to specific classes by request; work with instructors to develop content of instructional forums.
? Under the direction of the Access Services Librarian, oversee the implementation of Access Services systems, policies and procedures, including Global Delivery Services and Course Reserves.

? Deliver Access Services training for library staff and student assistants in coordination with the Access Services Librarian.

? Coordinate support for productivity services, including printing and scanning services, in the Academic Commons.

? Oversee the library’s collaborative study rooms, including general maintenance of the rooms and the reservation systems used to book them.

? Oversee maintenance and upgrading of the Academic Commons facility.

? Prepare standard and ad hoc reports to continually assess usage and the quality of service provided and make recommendations for service and process improvements for the Academic Commons.

? Maintain awareness of and respond appropriately to client service needs.

? Ensure technical competence through on-going professional development.

? Maintain familiarity with current information and instructional technologies and stay abreast in reference and research consultation, including chat and e-mail reference consultation.

Qualification

? Required Education
Master’s Degree in relevant field.

? Required Experience
? At least 2 years’ relevant experience in a customer service or academic library environment.
? Experience using an integrated library system (ILS), preferably Ex Libris’s Aleph system.

? Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
? Excellent interpersonal, research, and oral and written communication skills.
? Excellent command of spoken and written English. Demonstrated customer service orientation.
? Ability to interact with a diverse, international population of students, faculty, staff and patrons.
? Knowledge of academic library circulation and reference practices, including database searching and library organization schemes.
? Adaptability in responding to ever-changing technological environments and increasingly dynamic reference and research environments.
? Word processing, spreadsheet and database software proficiency.
? Familiarity with research methods in the humanities or social sciences.
? Experience working in an academic library.
? Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
? Knowledge of and ability to update, edit and search a variety of online library databases.
