Research Associate Position (Cognitive Neurosciences)

  

The Institute of Science and Technology for Brain-inspired Intelligence (ISTBI), Fudan University, Shanghai is seeking to appoint a talented and motivated individual to serve as a full-time Research Associate in a team of cognitive neuroscientists led by Dr. Deniz Vatansever, Dr. Wei Cheng & Prof. Edmund Rolls. The team aims to improve our understanding of the neural mechanisms behind human cognition, emotion, memory and related disorders, utilising cutting-edge cognitive assessment methods and neuroimaging techniques (3T & 7T MRI, biometrics and psychometrics).

  

The Research Associate will be involved in the implementation of research investigations, including the coordination and collection of neuroimaging, cognitive, behavioural and neuropsychological data. The initial appointment for this position will be for a two-year term, with a potential extension based on performance. The RA will work directly with the team leaders, will receive extensive training on cognitive neuroscience research methods, have opportunities to participate in reading groups and seminars, and collaborate on research publications. This position is ideally suited for individuals who are interested in pursuing a doctoral degree in the fields of neuroimaging, cognitive, clinical, computational neurosciences or psychology. Established in 2015 at Fudan University, ISTBI is an interdisciplinary research institution that aims to train the next generation of leading neuroscientists. In addition to an excellent team of researchers and technical staff, ISTBI is home to the newly constructed Zhangjiang International Brain Imaging Centre (ZIC), which houses state-of-the-art neuroimaging equipment that includes 3T, 7T and 11.7T MRI scanners, MEG and EEG as well as neuromodulation systems such as TMS and tDCS.

Job Description:

  

The Research Associate will be responsible for:

1.Designing and implementing multiple research experiments and procedures.

2.Running participants through research protocols such as obtaining informed consent, instructing participants to complete online surveys, conducting cognitive assessments, running computer-based experiments for MRI scanning.

3. Managing the recruitment, scheduling, payment and reimbursement of participants, ensuring that the procedures are compliant with the study protocols.

4. Developing and maintaining study-specific databases, recording and compiling information related to research data and performing quality control checks.

5. Analysing, processing and summarising study-specific data using scientific and statistical techniques, assisting in data analyses, reporting on the status of all research activities.

6. Conducting literature search and supporting publication efforts within the laboratory.

7. Performing basic administrative duties such as assisting with the preparation of Institutional Review Board (IRB) ethics applications and basic aspects of grant applications.

8. Acting as a liaison between the laboratory members and the university/institute.

9. Assisting with the preparation of conference posters and figures for paper publications.

10. Purchasing, receiving, storing, distributing and maintaining laboratory equipment.

Job Requirements:

1. Minimum of a Master’s degree in psychology, neuroscience, cognitive science, biology, medicine, computer science, or a related field.

2. Outstanding language skills in both written and spoken English and Chinese (Mandarin).

3. Self-motivated, mature, and enthusiastic about working in an academic setting.

4. Good interpersonal skills and a professional approach to working with human subjects.

5. Ability to work with a wide range of individuals including clinical populations.

6. Attention to detail and outstanding organisation skills.

7. Ability to work in a fast-paced setting and advance multiple tasks simultaneously.

8. Ability to handle fluctuating priorities and deadlines.

Preferred Education, Experience and Skills:

1. Prior research experience in experimental psychology or neuroimaging laboratories, including running experimental studies with human subjects.

2. Proficiency in programming languages (e.g. MATLAB, Python or BASH).

3. Familiarity with software packages used in the collection of experimental data such as PsychoPy, PsychToolbox or E-prime, and in the analysis of neuroimaging datasets such as FSL and SPM.

4. Experience with SPSS, SAS or R statistical programs.

5. Familiarity with or experience in academic research environments.
