School: DUCKS
Responsible to: Head of DUCKS
Responsible for: Development of the dual language approach at DUCKS, supporting the class teacher and developing the students’leaning of mandarin

Post-holder Description of Responsibilities:

Remuneration is in accordance with College policy, and additional non-contact time is allocated as appropriate.
Specific responsibilities include:
- To develop a co-teaching relationship with the class teacher demonstrating proficiency in English and Mandarin
- Support the class teacher with the learning of students in their care as directed by the class teacher
- Working alongside the class teacher to create an environment in which the student’s learning flourishes
- Facilitate the learning of individual children or small groups of children under the direction and in consultation with the class teacher
- Being responsible for the pastoral care of the students in their class and to be involved in the pastoral care of all students in DUCKS
- Taking part in the planning and preparation for learning both inside and outside the classroom in collaboration with the class teacher
- Establishing positive relationships with families, communicating and consulting with parents openly and willingly in both formal and informal situations, informing parents of overview of learning as well as ongoing events
- Creating a responsive, caring, welcoming, non-judgmental environment
- To be responsible in making the learning of Mandarin visible through Mandarin assemblies, classroom journeys and collaborating with classroom teachers to support dual language in the environment
- Supporting the Assistant Teachers in observing and collation of observation and assessments of students
- To act as a mentor to new and developing Assistant Teachers, developing Assistant Teachers and Dual Language Teachers
- To play a lead role in the development of Assistant Teachers
- To help parents understand the approach to Dual Language and enable and support them with their child at home
- Assisting with the movement of children around the school between specialist lessons
- To demonstrate a committed involvement in DUCKS and College events, especially Chinese New Year, and when directed by the Head of DUCKS
- To undertake supervisory duties in the playground as directed by the Deputy Head of DUCKS
- To accompany children to the school buses and ensure they are safely on board at the end of each day
- To participate in the extra-curricular life of the students by leading, organising or being involved in extra-curricular activities at DUCKS for at least one hour a week as well as events beyond school hours
- To contribute to weekly Cultural Mornings as required
- To cover bus monitor relief duties when directed by the Head of DUCKS
- To carry out other duties, as may be reasonably requested by the Head of College

- Dulwich Dual Language Teachers participate actively in professional learning and work collaboratively with colleagues to improve their practice and pedagogy and demonstrate in practice. They hold themselves accountable to the highest professional standards in their interactions with colleagues, students and parents.

Plan for and implement effective learning and teaching
- Dulwich teachers are expected to have current knowledge of the curriculum in the age range they teach. They set high expectations and challenging developmental and learning goals for their students and use a variety of effective learning and teaching strategies, resources and digital technology to support their students in achieving these goals.
In Early Years, Dual Language Teachers are expected to:
- Work co-operatively with the class teacher and other colleagues to plan, facilitate, and evaluate a programme that meets the needs of all children and follows the core philosophy and principles of the Early Years Foundation Stage UK and the Early Years practices at DUCKS
- Develop working partnerships with parents and families through the key person approach; Tapestry online portfolios; home visits; class visits
- Plan according to the child’s interests with language at the heart of all learning
- Observe, monitor and assess children’s learning within the expectations of the Early Years Learning Goals and be responsible for the end of term reporting to parents and putting in next steps for learning
- Undertake and commit to pedagogical professional development e.g. CACHE, English Language Learning, Language Acquisition
- Plan and prepare effective and outstanding Wo Hui Du Xie lessons
In Key Stage 1, Dual Language Teachers are expected to:
- Plan and prepare effective and outstanding Mandarin lessons including Wo Hui Du Xie
- Be responsible for the learning and teaching of Mandarin within Key Stage 1
- Assess students’ entry level and placement within a Mandarin pathway in collaboration with the Assistant Head of KS1
- Assess students’ progress in Mandarin throughout the academic year
- Collaborate with the Reception and Year 3 Mandarin Teams in the assessment and transition of students from Reception to Year 1 and from Year 2 to Year 3
- Effectively and regularly communicate with parents on students’ progress and be responsible for end of term reporting to parents
- Contribute in the ongoing evaluation and improvements of the Primary Mandarin Curriculum in collaboration with the Head of Mandarin
- Undertake and commit to pedagogical professional develop
Requirements:
- Must hold a recognised PRC Teaching Qualification
- A minimum of two years’ experience in an early years setting
- Proficiency and fluency in Mandarin and English
- Minimum English Language Proficiency: Common European Framework B1 (reference level IELTS 5)
- Demonstrate experience in supporting children’s learning in a stimulating learning environment
- Must demonstrate an open mind, flexibility of thought, and a commitment to working within a collaborative environment
- Must demonstrate an understanding of different cultural perspectives and embrace working within a diverse community of colleagues and families
- Demonstrate experience in using educational ICT to promote learning, or a willingness to do so
- Knowledge of the Early Years and KS1 curriculum pedagogy
- Awareness of the importance of using a variety of assessments and observation to assess children’s learning
- Commitment to supporting all aspects of our programme including extra-curricular activities and contribution to the school community
- Must be punctual and hold good attendance records
- Previous experience in an international school and familiarity with the British education system would be desirable
