American Securities (AS) is a middle market private equity firm which invests in traditional manufacturing and service businesses. The firm is headquartered in New York with an office in Shanghai. A typical target company would be between US$200Million to $1Billion in terms of enterprise value and have sales of US$100Million to $1Billion. In most cases, AS buys a majority control stake in private companies, however. AS would consider significant minority positions of private companies as well as make investments in public to private transactions.
American Securities was originally the family office of the Rosenwald Family, founders of the Sears Roebuck Chain of Department stores, with its history dating back to 1945. In 1994, AS formalized its private equity activities and began accepting capital from third-party investors. Since that time, the firm has raised five successive investment partnerships totaling over US$4 billion in committed equity.
The firm has invested in more than 30 platform companies (between current and exited) portfolio companies as well as numerous add-ons acquisitions. Currently there are ~20 operating companies in the firm’s portfolio with aggregate sales of over US$9 billion.
In addition to the American Securities funds listed above, AS affiliates manage four other investment vehicles – ICV Capital Partners, American Securities Opportunities Fund, Capital Yuan Tao China, and Sterling American Properties. These financial affiliates have an aggregate of over US$1 billion of committed capital in their cumulative funds.
