Senior Analyst – Market Analysis

• Support role with growth potential in our Market Analysis team in China

• Work closely with internal and extensive external networks for a holistic view of China’s industrial and commodity markets and policy environment

About the role

We are looking for a Senior Analyst in the Market Analysis team to cover China’s political and industrial economy and their impact on mining sectors and a range of commodity markets.

Market Analysis is one of two centralised analysis teams forming the Group’s analytical capability. The Market Analysis team reports to the Commercial Product Group and is responsible for generating short and medium term market insights (today to 5 years) including supply and competitor analysis; demand forecasts including those for downstream sectors; trading support; and price formation using advanced quantitative techniques. The team focus is to leverage these insights and analysis to support Commercial decision-making and generate value across Sales & Marketing, Procurement and Marine & Logistics. The Market Analysis team also provide short and medium term market context and commodity price forecasts to the broader Group.

This role is a great opportunity to be part of a high performing team and support cash generation and business growth through market analysis and advice. Reporting to the Manager, Market Analysis (Cross Commodities), you will:

• Collect, synthesize, analyse and interpret information and data to forecast 5-year industrial performance; underpinned by a robust and transparent set of methodologies.

• Support in development of narratives on Chinese business and industrial sectoral performance drawing on numerous sources and extensive networks.

• Monitor market development and industrial and trade policy and keep the broader Market Analysis team and extended stakeholder Group informed of daily changes/news/intelligence, as appropriate.

• Disseminate Market Analysis view, contribute to value creation activities, and collate market intel and customer feedback through regular communication with Shanghai office Sales and Marketing and RTP teams

• Assist with the organisation of sectoral, business, academic and governmental tours within China for MA and wider Rio Tinto team

• Proactively identifying commercial needs and process/data/analysis improvements to deliver high quality insights.

• Engage with the larger commercial team to identify opportunities and define areas where Market Analysis can add value and contribute to revenue generation.

About you

To be considered for this role, you will have:

• Cross-commodity knowledge

• Strong familiarity with Chinese data sources

• Proven ability to synthesize a narrative and generate high quality reports

• Advanced fluent written and spoken English

• Proven relevant experience and analytical skills with the ability to critically analyse data and identify trends and key drivers

• Proven ability to work well in a team environment with excellent interpersonal skills

• Excellent and proven project management skills

• Excellent IT skills including the use of MS Office and Power BI; further demonstrable skills in Python or R would be well-regarded

• A proven ability to further develop relationships with a wide range of internal and external stakeholders

• Ability to advise senior stakeholders and influence views via a fact based/informed approach

• Experience working in an international setting will be an advantage.
