Rio Tinto's Diamonds and Minerals product group is the acknowledged world leader in the supply and science of industrial minerals. Currently we have opportunities for three (3) research associates in our new Asia Technology Centre (ATC) in Suzhou. The ATC is an integral part of our R&D structure and provides research and experimentation on our and our customers' products in our laboratories, external research facilities, and customers' sites. The focus of the ATC is on borate chemistry in the areas of 1) glass and traditional ceramics, 2) metals and advances ceramics, 3) certain chemicals, 4) agriculture fertilizers, and 5) analytical chemistry.

Requirements:

1. Bachelor's degree or above and strong theoretical knowledge in chemistry, materials, engineering or agriculture.
2. Technical experience, preferably in a laboratory setting, in at least one of the following: 1) inorganic chemistry; or 2) high temperature physical and chemical processing such as sintering, glass forming, smelting; or 3) agriculture chemicals; or 4) analytical chemistry and instrumentation notably ICP, SEM, XRD, and quantitative chemical analysis.

3. Good written and verbal communication skills in English and Chinese.

4. Administrative skills to document data and daily work activities.

5. Ability to work in teams and to collaborate within the group for problem solving and communication of project and safety issues.

6. Ability to prioritize workloads.

7. Proficient in word processing and spreadsheet applications.

8. Ability to interpret and communicate results and make recommendations on how to improve methods and procedures.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Fully support location health, safety and environmental programs by participating in their implementation, maintenance and enforcement as well as compliance with corporate programs.
2. Under guidance of technical professionals, design experiments and collect and analyse data contributing to the success of research projects.
3. Prepare, test, and analyse samples for properties such as chemical composition and physical properties.
4. Perform trials and experiments in other laboratories, at customer manufacturing plants for industrial products, or in agriculture test plots for fertilizer products.
5. Record test results and write reports on findings.
6. Operate and maintain (calibrate and repair) laboratory instruments and equipment such as inductively coupled plasma spectrometers, optical and scanning electron microscopes, X-ray diffractometers, auto titrators, particle size instruments, furnaces, centrifuges, power tools, mixers, grinders, etc.
7. Train others and coordinate activities concerning specialized testing and equipment operation.
8. May provide support for projects in other areas of the company to gain broader knowledge.
9. May be responsible for making recommendations on the feasibility of projects based on findings and experience.
10. May assist with publication and/or revision of literature on company products and applications.
11. May assist with methods development and statistical design of experiments.
12. May assist with new business development on projects in Asia, requiring travel within and outside China.
