Job Description
Position Title: Director, Quality Assurance - Asia
Location: Shanghai, China
Reporting to: Operations VP - Asia
Client Profile:
Our client in one of the leading Fortune 500 companies in chemical industry and the sixth largest paint and coatings company in the world. His businesses supply a variety of innovative coatings and paints to consumers and manufacturers in a wide range of industries. 2011 revenues are approaching US$4 billion, with nearly half of sales generated outside of North America.
Over the past decade, our client has boosted its core business through organic growth and acquisitions of coatings companies around the world; it has made more than 25 acquisitions, including joint venture interests. That strategy has made the company one of the top global industrial coatings makers. Current businesses in China including:
Packaging Coatings - Our client is the world's leading supplier of packaging coatings with annual sales of approximately $850 million.
Industrial Coatings - Used by heavy equipment OEMs and manufacturers of building products, appliances, shipping containers and functional materials such as pipe and rebar, his coatings provided aesthetic and functional performance characteristics that are essential to our customers.
Wood Coatings - Our client is a leading supplier of paints, stains and coatings used by wood product manufacturers (eg - furniture and cabinets) in Asia and North America.
Automotive Refinishes - Our client is a niche player in high quality refinishes for automotive repair, restoration and hobby applications worldwide.
Responsibilities:
- Assure that manufacturing quality and performance data are comprehensively measured, trended, reported and acted on in a timely manner to assure compliance and support continuous supplier improvement.
- Follow through to ensure appropriate response to audit observations with appropriate corrective actions, aimed at eliminating the source of the observed compliance issue, within established completion dates.
Key Requirements:
Education
- A Bachelor's degree is required, preferably in Chemical Engineering or related discipline.
- Fluent verbal and written communication skills in English and Chinese is required.
Experience
- Minimum of ten years Quality Assurance experience, with considerable experience leading Quality Assurance initiatives in a progressive manufacturing organization.
- Experience in a related industry such as CHEMICAL, PAINT, or BATCH Processing environments strongly preferred.
- Experience in a multi-national corporation is required.
- Demonstrated strong leader with the ability to drive change within an organization; desire to lead a team to build Quality Assurance as an integral part of rapidly growing businesses.
- Passion for the field of Quality Assurance and strong knowledge of quality systems (ISO and other leading Quality Systems) with experience implementing and transforming organizations.
- Previous people management experience.
- Demonstrated ability to lead effectively and interface successfully with customers.
- Ability to work effectively and leverage resources in a lean organization.
- Willingness to travel regularly as required - estimated 30%
- Experience in a process environment that includes high volume mixing; continuous flow operations, blending of liquids or chemicals.
- Experience building a Quality management system from the ground up.
- Professional certification in Quality Assurance (ASQ CQE or CQM)
- Strong influencing skills and ability to deal with important business issues.
- Lean Six Sigma training and/or certification desired (Blackbelt preferred)
- Strong PC and technology skills (spreadsheets, word processing, analytics) and a track record of effective project management.

- A clear and focused intellectual thinker, able to grasp the total business picture of this enterprise.
- Practical leader who enjoys involvement in solving problems, and orchestrates operational improvements by knowing and understanding what manager's face, while providing meaningful guidance concerning appropriate solutions.
