Position Summary
Duke Kunshan University is offering the Duke University Talent Identification Program’s (Duke TIP) Summer Studies Program in China for academically talented 8-10th grade students from around the world from July 9-29, 2017. The psychological counselor is an integral part of the administrative team that oversees this program. The primary responsibilities of the psychological counselor are providing assistance for students who are experiencing social or emotional difficulties, overseeing the general health and wellbeing of the staff and students, and supporting all instructional and residential staff members. The psychological counselor also assists with students experiencing stress pertaining to academics. The psychological counselor assists the on-site director with staff orientation and training. Detailed responsibilities include, but are not limited to, items listed under Specific Duties.

General Working Hours:
The psychological counselor will ideally be fluent in English and Chinese. The psychological counselor maintains high visibility on campus (at least 8 hours a day) by attending major events, observing classes, participating in staff meetings, and meeting with students as necessary. Interactions with staff and students take place during meals, free-time, activities, and scheduled office hours. The psychological counselor must be available 24-hours/day, 6 days/week by cell phone to respond to crisis situations. The psychological counselor should confer regularly with the other administrative team members to discuss student and site issues. The psychological counselor and other administrative staff must arrive several days before other staff to begin campus preparations. Should the counselor decide not to reside on campus, he/she must be able to get to the site within 30 minutes by car.

Qualifications
A master’s degree or comparable formal training is required with graduate coursework in clinical psychology, social work, or counseling. Professional counseling experience is strongly preferred. Experience with gifted students is helpful. Applicants must possess excellent organizational skills as well as an ability to work cooperatively with others. A genuine interest in the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescents, a positive and professional attitude, and a willingness to serve as a role model for staff and students are also necessary.

General Expectations
Abide by policies and procedures set forth by Duke Kunshan University and Duke TIP.
Support administrative decisions and the overarching organizational mission.
Demonstrate exemplary behavior as it relates to being a representative of Duke Kunshan University and Duke TIP.
Arrive on the contracted start date at the specified time and location, attend all designated orientation sessions and scheduled meetings during the term, and perform all contractual duties at the assigned times.
Maintain professional relationships with all students and staff members.
Enforce all student rules fairly and consistently.
Refrain from the following strictly prohibited activities:
Consuming alcoholic beverages in the presence of students or at any time at the program site (including, but not limited to, housing facilities, classrooms, parking lots, athletic fields, etc.) regardless of the distance from Duke TIP's designated area. At independent Field Studies sites and international sites, all staff must refrain from consuming any alcoholic beverages for the entire duration of the program, including breaks and times when you are away from students.
Returning to campus in an inebriated condition.
Possessing, selling, distributing, or using illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia.
Possessing or using weapons or firearms of any kind.
Inviting guests to visit the residence halls or to stay overnight in residence hall rooms.
Using tobacco products or electronic cigarettes in the residence hall or in the presence of students.
Using inappropriate language, including profanity, discriminatory statements, and comments of a sexual nature.
Understand that this position requires a full time commitment. Holding other jobs or taking classes during the contracted time period is prohibited.
On each night spent in program housing, staff members must return by the designated curfew and reside in their assigned rooms.

Specific Duties
Student Counseling:
Provide individual crisis intervention counseling to referred and self-referred students who are experiencing social, emotional difficulties, and/or stress pertaining to academics.
Facilitate group conflict resolution sessions for referred and self-referred students.
Work in concert with the academic coordinator to assist and assess students identified by instructors as experiencing social or behavioral difficulties in the classroom.
Work in concert with the residential life coordinator to assist and assess students identified by residential staff as experiencing social or behavioral difficulties in the residential setting.
Meet regularly with administrative team and maintain regular and timely communication with the site supervisor to discuss student problems and to make recommendations for advisement and other action leading to desirable outcomes.
Maintain an active and engaged presence on the campus through regular participation in students’ dining and social programming activities in order to obtain an accurate assessment of the social and emotional climate on campus.
Provide 24-hour availability for emergency situations through cell phone. Respond to all messages within 10 minutes of receipt.

Staff Training and Support:
Assist the administrative team with design and implementation of orientation programs for instructional and residential staff.
Conduct in-service workshops, as requested, for instructional and residential staff on topics such as crisis intervention, learning disabilities, and self-destructive behavior prevention.
Provide consultations for serving the needs of students with emotional, social, or behavioral difficulties. Assist with student and residential staff in cases of crisis assessment and prevention.
Serve as peer advisor to all staff regarding effective communication, team-building, and conflict resolution.
Attend weekly instructional and residential staff meetings on a regular basis.
Provide informal, individual, and confidential support to instructional and residential staff. Consult with professional mentor as needed to address pressing staff situations.

Referral Services:
In consultation with the director of international programs and a professional mentor, refer students with severe difficulties to appropriate therapeutic agencies as necessary.
Serve as liaison to parents regarding concerns about students’ emotional and behavioral difficulties such as homesickness, social withdrawal, or aggressive behaviors.

Administration:
On student arrival days, assist with check in of student medications according to the policies outlined in training.
Assist with parent concerns and be available to talk with parents on arrival and departure days.
Read and review training materials sent by Duke Kunshan University and Duke TIP before the program begins.
Attend online or in-person training sessions facilitated by Duke Kunshan University and Duke TIP staff in the spring.
