Residence Hall Leader
Position Summary
Residence Hall Leaders assist with all residential aspects program and are supervised by the residential life coordinator. Residence Hall Leaders organize student housing, lead residential staff training sessions, organize duty schedules, chair committees, and plan social and recreational activities for students. Residence Hall Leaders are no longer assigned a group of students to directly supervise. Residence Hall Leader responsibilities include day, evening, and night commitments. In addition to supervising students and holding programs and events on weekdays and on weekends, Residence Hall Leaders will attend staff meetings; assist with student supervision at meals, and complete projects during the day. Along with administrative staff, Residence Hall Leaders must arrive several days before other staff to begin campus preparations. Residence Hall Leaders are required to live at the program site.
General Expectations
- Abide by policies and procedures set forth by Duke TIP and the host institution.
- Support administrative decisions and the overarching organizational mission.
- Demonstrate exemplary behavior as it relates to being a representative of Duke University, Duke TIP, and its partners.
- Arrive on the contracted start date at the specified time and location, attend all designated orientation sessions and scheduled meetings during the term, and perform all contractual duties at the assigned times.
- Maintain professional relationships with all students and staff members.
- Enforce all student rules fairly and consistently.
- Refrain from the following strictly prohibited activities:
» consuming alcoholic beverages in the presence of students or at any time at the program site (including, but not limited to, housing facilities, classrooms, parking lots, athletic fields, etc.) regardless of the distance from Duke TIP’s designated area
» returning to campus in an inebriated condition
» possessing, selling, distributing, or using illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia
» possessing or using weapons or firearms of any kind
» inviting guests to visit the residence halls or to stay overnight in residence hall rooms
» using tobacco products or electronic cigarettes in the residence hall or in the presence of students
» using inappropriate language, including profanity, discriminatory statements, and comments of a sexual nature
- Understand that this position requires a full-time commitment. Holding other jobs or taking classes during the contracted time period is prohibited.
- For each night spent in program housing, staff members must return by the midnight curfew and reside in their assigned rooms.
Specific Duties
Programming
- Organize daily programs and activities for students, including evening programs and weekend events. Use creativity in designing activities that appeal to a diverse group of students.
- Organize an activity once a week specifically for the students in the residential group.
- Actively participate in committee work. Committees are responsible for organizing specific
campus-wide events.
- Foster an environment conducive to students’ educational goals.
- Be available to help students with questions or concerns about their academic coursework.
- Attend classes in which your students are enrolled at least once a week.
- Assist and collaborate with instructional staff as needed.
Student Supervision
- Serve as a positive role model and resource for all students.
- Be a visible and accessible presence on campus. Be proactive in responding to student concerns and problems. Immediately report critical information to an administrative team member.
- Eat meals in the dining halls in order to maintain a visible presence among students and staff, as well as assist other staff members with student supervision.
- Respond to student emergency situations at all times. Utilize emergency protocol outlined in training.
- Confer with instructional staff to provide assistance with students’ academic or behavioral issues.
- Review and submit electronic action reports to maintain an awareness of student issues.
- Work with residential and administrative staff to establish appropriate methods of articulating program expectations and enforcing program rules.
- Establish residence hall policies, such as guidelines for laundry room and lounge usage.
- Enforce Duke TIP rules consistently and fairly. Facilitate the resolution of student behavior problems, including appropriate disciplinary action, in conjunction with the Residence Life Coordinator and On-Site Director.
Staff Supervision
- Establish Residence Hall Leader teams or a group of Residential Counselors for each residential hall leader to manage, as determined by the Residential Life Coordinator.
- Host weekly individual meetings with the Residential Counselor(s) under your management.
- Foster relationships and a sense of cooperation among the Residential Counselors.
- Communicate daily with each member of the residential staff.
- Serve as a resource and positive role model for all residential staff.
- Complete an evaluation for the program, and each Residential Counselor at the end of each session.
- Consult with Residence Life Coordinator to address performance issues among residential staff.
Staff Training
- With the Residence Life Coordinator, organize and lead training for residential staff before each term. Help prepare orientation materials for Residential Counselors.
- Facilitate at least one residential in-service training or workshop (per term) during staff meetings to foster continued professional development and team building among the residential staff.
Team Membership
- Attend and co-facilitate residential staff meetings.
- Attend residential leadership team meetings at least once per week.
- Take turns being on-call during the Residential Life Coordinator or On-Site Director’s day off.
- Assume Residential Life Coordinator roles and responsibilities on their day off.
- Attend administrative team meetings and individual meetings with the Residence Life Coordinator as necessary.
- Meet regularly with other Residential Counselors to plan and organize daily activities for students.
Administration
- Assist with documentation of routine illnesses, ongoing health problems, and student emergencies.
- Assist in scheduling health appointments and with medication duty.
- Manage the retrieval of images and posting of daily content for the Duke TIP Parent Blog Wordpress webpage.
- Maintain responsibility for the safety, cleanliness, and security of the residence hall.
- Submit work orders and maintenance requests for the hall as needed.
- Assist the Residence Life Coordinator room assignments and room inspections at the beginning of the term.
- Assist with preparation for student arrival including hall decorations, student file review, and other duties as needed.
- Assist in student arrival and departure day procedures.
- Assist the Residence Life Coordinator with logistics for all special campus wide events.
- Oversee the inventory process for all residential supplies.
- In the event that a Residential Counselor must unexpectedly leave his or her position, Residential Hall Leaders may be asked to assume the responsibilities of that Residential Counselor.
- Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
The RHL for the the China Program will ideally be fluent in English and Chinese. Prior to beginning employment, applicants are required to have successfully completed a minimum of two years of college.
Experience as a staff member of a residential program or institution is preferred; residential counselor experience in a Duke TIP summer program or similar residential program is helpful. Leadership and/or supervisory experience is essential. Applicants must possess a genuine interest in the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescents, exhibit maturity and a positive attitude, and be willing to serve as a role model for students. Applicants must be able to work as part of a team; lead staff in organizing projects and activities; explain, support, and enforce Duke TIP rules and administrative decisions; and manage administrative responsibilities.
