Position Summary
Residential Counselors supervise a group of 10–14 students. Residential Counselors are supervised by the Residence Life Coordinator and work with other staff members to accomplish the overall mission of the program by attending to the safety, well-being, and enjoyment of program participants. In addition to supervising students and holding programs and events on weekdays and on weekends, Residential Counselors will attend staff meetings, be scheduled for duties on a rotating basis, and complete projects during the day. Residential Counselor responsibilities include day, evening, and night commitments. Residential Counselors have one 24-hour period off during each week. Residential Counselors are required to live at the program site. Detailed responsibilities include, but are not limited to, items listed under specific duties.
General Expectations
- Abide by policies and procedures set forth by Duke TIP and the host institution.
- Support administrative decisions and the overarching organizational mission.
- Demonstrate exemplary behavior as it relates to being a representative of Duke University, Duke TIP, and its partners.
- Arrive on the contracted start date at the specified time and location, attend all designated orientation sessions and scheduled meetings during the term, and perform all contractual duties at the assigned times.
- Maintain professional relationships with all students and staff members.
- Enforce all student rules fairly and consistently.
- Refrain from the following strictly prohibited activities:
» consuming alcoholic beverages in the presence of students or at any time at the program site (including but not limited to, housing facilities, classrooms, parking lots, athletic fields, etc.) regardless of the distance from Duke TIP’s designated area
» returning to campus in an inebriated condition
» possessing, selling, distributing, or using illegal drugs or drug paraphernalia
» possessing or using weapons or firearms of any kind
» inviting guests to visit the residence halls or to stay overnight in residence hall rooms
» using tobacco products or electronic cigarettes in the residence hall or in the presence of students
» using inappropriate language, including profanity, discriminatory statements, and comments of a sexual nature
- Understand that this position requires a full-time commitment. Holding other jobs or taking classes during the contracted time period is prohibited.
- For each night spent in program housing, staff members must return by the midnight designated curfew and reside in their assigned rooms.
Specific Duties
Programming
- Organize daily programs and activities for students. Use creativity in designing activities that appeal to a diverse group of students.
- Organize an activity once a week specifically for the 10–14 students in the residential group.
- Foster an environment conducive to students’ educational goals and social development.
- Attend classes in which your students are enrolled at least once a week.
- Cover for other Residential Counselors on their days off.
- Assist and collaborate with instructional staff as needed.
Student Supervision
- Supervise a group of 10–14 students. Communicate daily with each student in the group.
- Review the medical form of each student in the group.
- Meet nightly (before student bedtime) with members of the group.
- Lead large group activities on weekends and assist with small group programming on weekdays.
- Facilitate Residential Counselor group activities.
- Get to know all students at Duke TIP.
- Serve as a positive role model and resource for all students.
- Be a visible and accessible presence on campus. Be proactive in responding to student concerns and incidents, and immediately report critical information to an on-site administrator.
- Accompany assigned group of students to meals each day. Breakfast supervision is strongly suggested; dinner supervision is required.
- Respond to student emergency situations. Follow emergency protocol outlined in training.
- Confer with instructional staff to provide assistance with students’ academic or behavioral issues.
- Work with residential staff to establish appropriate methods of articulating program expectations.
- Follow up immediately on student behavior incidents.
- Document noticeable changes in behavior, concerns about students, and issues with discipline.
- Facilitate the resolution of student behavior problems, including appropriate disciplinary action, in conjunction with the Residential Life Coordinator and On-Site Director.
Team Membership
- Attend residential staff meetings.
- Meet regularly with other Residential Counselors to plan and organize daily activities for students.
- Actively participate in at least one committee responsible for coordinating an all campus activity.
- Attend individual meetings with your supervisors as requested.
- Provide support and assistance to other Duke TIP staff members.
Administration
- Submit work orders and maintenance requests as needed.
- Complete room inspections at the beginning and end of each term.
- Make door decorations at the beginning of each term.
- Assist in student arrival and departure day procedures.
- Participate in rotating duty schedule for various responsibilities, including mail duty, shopping duty, office duty, transportation duty, and medication duty.
- Complete program and staff evaluations at the end of each term.
- Complete an evaluation of each student in the residential group at the end of the term.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications
RC’s for the China Program will ideally be fluent in English and Chinese. Prior to beginning employment, applicants are required to have successfully completed of a minimum of one year of college. Experience as a camp counselor, college resident assistant, or similar position is preferred; staff or participant experience with programs for the academically gifted is helpful. Experience working with multilingual students and classrooms is also preferred. Applicants must possess a genuine interest in the academic, social, and emotional growth of adolescents, exhibit maturity and a positive attitude, and be willing to serve as a role model for students. Applicants must be able to work as part of a team; organize projects and activities; explain, support, and enforce Duke TIP rules; and manage administrative responsibilities. Applicants who express creativity in their activity planning are highly desired.
