The jobholder will develop and maintain a network of contacts across South China for the British Consulate General Guangzhou. As part of this work they will promote in South China the flagship British government scholarship programme, the Chevening Scholarship and manage our relations with Chevening Alumni. Through this network building they will have the opportunity to meet a diverse and high profile set of contacts from the many different fields the Consulate works in.

Every year a large number of high profile UK visitors travel to South China, including government ministers and sometimes royalty. The jobholder will assist the Consul-General's Executive Assistant and Media and Visits officer to organise programmes for these UK visitors to South China, and to organise high profile receptions and events for the British Consulate in Guangzhou, for example the Queen's Birthday Party.

The job-holder will also assist the Deputy Consul-General, organising his diary, and providing briefing and logistical support for his calls and trips. She will support the Consul-General's Executive Assistant and cover for her in her absence.

The role of Head of Communications (South China region) is an important and demanding one. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading the team managing the media and digital aspects of the full range of the UK's activity in South China. Developing the UK's engagement with China is a priority for the UK and our public profile is critical to success. China receives a high number of senior visitors from the UK, including visits by the Prime Minister, Foreign Secretary and other influential figures. The successful applicant will have the opportunity to work with these senior figures.

S/he will also have responsibility for promoting the UK's 'soft power' efforts in China by designing and delivering public diplomacy projects that support the UK's messages. Media and campaigning activities will involve working together with counterparts at the Embassy in Beijing and other Consulates. The successful applicant will play a vital role in building relationships with creative and relatively open media in South China.
