Minimum Qualifications
· Bachelor of Science / Engineering Degree in Mechanical engineering – PhD or MSC preferred
· Five years experience in the design of Automotive Engine components
· Fluent in speaking, reading and writing the English language (German is added points )
Technical Skills Requirements
· Proficient use of a CAD package (CATIA, Pro Engineer, IDEAS and/or UG) for the purpose of creating 3D CAD models and 2D drawings preferred.
· Competent at completing tolerance stacks for complex components, assemblies and systems, including statistical tolerance analysis.
· Experience of developing Failure Mode Effect Analysis (DFMEA) for various products.
· Exceptional organizational and communication skills both verbal and written.
· Ability to read, develop or manage project time lines.
· Awareness of concurrent and simultaneous engineering techniques with the ability to lead or work as part of a project team to achieve results often with short or compressed timing.
· Ability to work clearly and logically in all circumstances including where project timescales are short, deadlines are tight or where it is necessary to resolve customer problems.
· Experience of developing testing and validation plans to support robust product designs.
· Knowledge of GD&T, QFD, VE/VA, DOE, PFMEA, DFM/DFA/DFS and supporting analytical tools.
· Understanding of 8D and other recognized problem solving techniques applicable to the automotive industry.
· Knowledge of ANSI, SAE, QS9000/TS16949 and other industry/customer related standards.
· Experience of APQP process and other industry/customer related standards applicable to product design, development and launch.
· Blue Print Reading.
· Understanding of design inputs and outputs for CAE, particularly FEA and CFD.
· Competent and experienced at writing engineering reports suitable for issue to Customers.
· Knowledge of techniques and processes used to produce prototype components.
Primary Function
Lead the design and development of engine system components, assemblies and integrated modules. This will primarily be vacuum pumps but will in the future include front engine covers, oil pumps, powder metal components, High & Low pressure castings, as well as, applicable sub-components.
Responsible for leading all aspects of the design and development process, (drawings, calculations, simulation, testing creation and maintenance of product DFMEA’s, etc.). Must oversee the progress of design and development activities, keeping detailed design open issues lists, timelines and schedules, reporting back to the Department Manager, or as applicable the Global Engineering Leader.
Must be able to interface with several Company divisions and Tier 2 suppliers located around the world in overall design of engine system components and modules. Will be required to communicate with the end Customer as necessary to meet all project objectives.
Works as a member of the product engineering design team to achieve goals and targets through both individual and team based tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities
1. Must be able to work for periods of time in German or Austria location, with initial assignment in the range of 6-12 months.
2. Undertakes calculations, analysis and simulations from basic or first principles following established design practices.
3. Lead the design and development of engine system components, assemblies and integrated modules, providing all necessary technical input and direction, this will primarily be vacuum pumps.
4. Undertakes and records detailed tolerance stacks necessary to support the design of robust and reliable products.
5. Check 2D print, (and/or 3D models), to ensure that conform to all necessary standards and functional requirements.
6. Produce part proposal drawings, (and 3D models), starting from rough design concepts up to detail/final drawings where necessary or applicable.
7. Maintains and updates CAD files library where necessary or applicable.
8. Supports Testing & Validation department by specifying test requirement & ensuring tests are completed to specification. Responsible for reviewing test results and taking necessary design actions based on those results to improve products or address issues.
9. Participates in APQP meetings, leading meetings, task or actions as applicable to design and development tasks.
10. Responsible to lead activities surrounding DFMEA creation and maintenance, working directly with Reliability Engineering to ensure appropriate standards are maintained and applicable reliability tools are used.
11. Supports other activities related to assigned projects, as per TS16949 procedures (i.e. design, input/output sheet, APQP).
12. Leads Design For Manufacture, Design For Assembly and Design For Service activities to ensure products designs are feasible and efficient for manufacture.
13. Understanding of 8D and other recognized problem solving techniques applicable to the automotive industry. Leads problem solving activities or teams to resolve specific issues.
14. Prepare component level “Statement Of Requirements”.
15. Contacts sub-contractors and Tier II vendors to coordinate overall design review of components and assemblies.
16. Prepares design and/or engineering reports when requested.
17. Initiates plans and ideas for cost reduction and/or quality improvement measures.
18. Ensures all Company quality procedures are followed during the Design & Development stage of all components.
19. Ensures all meetings are minuted, circulated and liked accordingly.
20. Maintains proper filing systems to ensure all information, (electronic or hard copy), is properly stored and easily retrieved.
21. Prepare and work to schedules with interim and end target estimates for all projects within his/her responsibility.
22. Undertake other duties and responsibilities within the Engineering Department, if required by either the Department Manager or the Global Engineering Leader.
23. Provides Engineering support to other departments within the company as directed by the Department Manager or the Global Engineering Leader.
24. Follows and enforces the guidelines and rules as defined in the Employee Handbook and Company policies.
25. Will be required to work “on-site” at customer or other locations for different period of time.
26. Frequent travel is to be expected.
27. May involve working extended hours on occasions to meet working objectives.
