Microsoft Research Asia is recruiting a Systems Engineer to provide support for over 1,500 servers, 700 clients, and various research prototypes. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining both test and production systems. The position requires many different skills including automated deployment, SQL, IIS, networking and hardware familiarity. Additionally, the successful candidate will support public events throughout Asia and the US, so it helps if you have a background in theatre, playing in a band, or even being a DJ!

This job requires international travel to the United States and elsewhere. You must be willing to travel on business for 1-2 weeks several times a year. You must qualify for a passport, and also qualify to apply for a USA visa. You also must have no criminal record.

Daily Responsibilities

- Escalate engineering issues as needed to team members, hardware vendors or partner teams.
- Respond to customer requests for support with a friendly customer service attitude.
- Troubleshoot networking, deployment and usability issues throughout the environment.
- Coordinate with Data Center staff for hands-on tasks.
- Update and maintain documentation and team knowledge base.
- Update and troubleshoot team SharePoint server and customer-facing portal site.
- Update and troubleshoot data collection and reporting systems.
- Help customers to meet their business needs with the appropriate technology.

Required Skills

- Good written and spoken English is required. Our office runs in the English language.
- Three or more years professional experience managing and troubleshooting Windows Server and/or Linux.
- Good understanding of imaging technologies and deployment techniques.
- Familiar with scripting technology and automation.
- Solid understanding of fault tolerant disk arrays and backups.
- Familiarity with Cisco Switch configurations for VLAN assignment, channel grouping and port configuration.
- In depth knowledge of TCP/IP and network routing.
- Experience managing websites and application pools on production systems.
- Experience managing and troubleshooting TCP/IP networks.
- Experience managing AD objects, OUs, Group Policies, NTFS and share permissions.
- An excellent understanding of current mobile and tablet technologies, preferably Windows.
- Excellent customer service attitude and communication skills.
- Ability to learn new technologies fast! In MSRA, we often work with research prototypes and technologies that are brand new.
- Eagerness and attitude to solve hard problems, even when there is no obvious solution.


Desired Skills

- Proficiency in managing SQL servers for basic administration

- Installation, moves, backup, restore, maintenance plans.
- MCSE or MCP certification in Windows Server, Windows Networking, IIS, SQL and/or SCOM.
- CCNA or greater Cisco certification or course work.
- Experience using alerting and ticketing systems.
- Familiarity with automated monitoring for system health.
- Experience administering SAN/NAS, especially NetApp.
