Key Objectives
The BMW Powertrain Office China is currently being built up in Beijing. It's focus will be ensuring the BMW Group access to new technologies in the field of electric powertrains. Currently the BMW Group is strengthening it's internal know-how in the field of battery technology is hence building up labs and prototype production facilities for li-ion cells. The cell research shall further comprise a variety of research projects with renowned institutes all over the world. The coordinator for battery technology research shall evaluate the Chinese research activities in the field Li-Ion cells at both industry and universities and identify potential partners for cooperation. Furthermore all research projects contracted with Chinese universities and institutes shall be steered on a scientific level.

Major Responsibilities
-Screening of research activities in the field of battery technology and battery chemistry in China at universities, institutes and battery/material companies. Early identification of trends in said field in the Chinese market. -Evaluation of research capabilities and achievements and identification of capable partners for research cooperation. -Definition of suitable research projects with external Chinese partners based on their scientific strengths, as well as BMW's technological interests, represented through the battery technology research project lead in Germany. -Set up of research contracts, with clear IP regulations and definitive project milestones and deliverables, together with the BMW legal department. -Local steering of the contracted research projects by monitoring milestones, evaluating intermediate results and making scientific decisions about the next steps of the research projects, if necessary in compliance with the central battery technology project lead in Germany. -Approval of research bills financial clearing, based on the deliverables as agreed in the contract. -Ongoing consolidation of all information obtained from above mentioned screening activities, as well as research cooperation into a management-ready internal status report about the Battery Industry in China.

Education / Degree
PhD in Chemistry, Physics or Materials Science with profound scientific work experience in the field of Li-ion battery chemistry and at least a part of the work experience obtained at an overseas research institution.

Knowledge / Skills / Competences
-Sound knowledge about fundamental electrochemistry, Lithium-ion- and post-Lithium-ion cell technology, Experience with electrochemical investigation methods and surface science techniques, Know-how about chemical cell reaction mechanisms, intercalation processes and degradation mechanisms. -Proficiency with state of the art and upcoming new cell materials (cathode- and anode materials, electrolytes, separators, binders), but also electrode preparation, cell/pack/battery design and development and integration of the system into the vehicle, bottom-up and top-down-approaches. -Basic knowledge about automotive technology and conventional powertrain architecture. -Strong talent to self-reliantly create networks with potential research partners. -Basic knowledge about Chinese NEV industry (carmakers, battery suppliers, charging infrastructure providers, etc.) and about Chinese regulations and standards. -Business fluent English language skills, German language skills are beneficial but not compulsory. -Intercultural competency, willingness to travel to Germany for medium-term training purposes. -Excitement for automobiles, especially alternative powertrains. -Self-reliant working attitude and high communication skills.

Experience
-more than 6 years work experience in Li-ion cell chemistry research (including time of dissertation), preferably with respect to automotive applications. -experience in industry-university cooperation work either by working at at university or a related industry company. -International experience (preferably research experience in above mentioned fields in an overseas country).
